They heart pets

If lugging that dog food all the way from Greektown is getting to you, there's a new pet store in town.

For the Love of Animals opened in December, and it's where I buy dog training pads for my geriatric kitty - who's started peeing outside the box, poor thing.

Owner Marilyn Murray runs the store with son Ian, who tells me the store carries medium to high-end food for cats and dogs, birds, fish and some rodents.

They try to be as ethical as possible in all they do, he adds, which means carrying a selection of food including natural brands. And they don't sell anything that's alive - not even a cricket - to feed other pets, a philosophy I laud.

If you want to learn more about local animal rescue initiatives drop by on Sat., Aug. 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. as they'll be having an adoption event featuring animals from Guinea Pigs R Us, a guinea pigs rescue organization.

Ian tells me it won't be as easy as walking in and just picking out an animal and leaving, and that peeps will still have to go through an adoption process.

Guinea pigs, he says, are considered disposable pets and often go from the pet store to the shelter as people aren't told how to adequately care for them.

Sad stuff but I'm glad to hear they're educating the community about the issue.
